Anomalous Scaling of Structure Functions and Dynamic Constraints on Turbulence Simulations

چکیده
The connection between anomalous scaling of structure functions (intermittency) and numerical methods for turbulence simulations is discussed. It is argued that the computational work for direct numerical simulations (DNS) of fully developed turbulence increases as Re4, and not as Re3 expected from Kolmogorov’s theory, where Re is a large-scale Reynolds number. Various relations for the moments of acceleration and velocity derivatives are derived. An infinite set of exact constraints on dynamically consistent subgrid models for Large Eddy Simulations (LES) is derived from the Navier-Stokes equations, and some problems of principle associated with existing LES models are highlighted.

Dissipation and enstrophy in isotropic turbulence: Resolution effects and scaling in direct numerical simulations
Existing experimental and numerical data suggest that the turbulence energy dissipation and enstrophy i.e., the square of vorticity possess different scaling properties, while available theory suggests that there should be no differences at sufficiently high Reynolds numbers. We have performed a series of direct numerical simulations with up to 20483 grid points where advanced computational pow...
متن کاملAnalytical and numerical approaches to structure functions in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence
In magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, the classical theory by Kraichnan and Iroshnikov based on dimensional analysis gives a linear dependence of the exponents p = p=4 of the structure functions for the Elss asser variables z = u B. This linear behavior contradicts observations of MHD turbulence in the solar wind, where anomalous scaling was found similar as in hydrodynamic turbulence. Since the e...
متن کاملIntermittency Effects in Rotating Decaying Turbulence
Rotation modulates turbulence causing columnar structuring of a turbulent flow in case of sufficiently strong rotation. This yields significant changes in the flow characteristics and dispersion properties, which makes rotational turbulence modulation particularly relevant in the context of atmospheric and oceanic flows. Here we investigate the canonical flow of turbulence in a periodic box, su...
متن کاملIntermittency in turbulence: computing the scaling exponents in shell models.
We discuss a stochastic closure for the equation of motion satisfied by multiscale correlation functions in the framework of shell models of turbulence. We present a plausible closure scheme to calculate the anomalous scaling exponents of structure functions by using the exact constraints imposed by the equation of motion. We present an explicit calculation for fifth-order scaling exponent by v...
متن کاملAnomalous Scaling and Generic Structure Function in Turbulence
We discuss on an example a general mechanism of apparition of anomalous scaling in scale invariant systems via zero modes of a scale invariant operator. We discuss the relevance of such mechanism in turbulence, and point out a peculiarity of turbulent flows, due to the existence of both forcing and dissipation. Following these considerations, we show that if this mechanism of anomalous scaling ...
